Morgan Scores Winner As Newington Advances

CROMWELL, CONNECTICUT - Mike Morgan scored from the high slot with 8 minutes, 43 seconds left to lift fourth-seeded Newington over No. 5 seed Sheehan 3-2 in a quarterfinal of the CIAC Division II boys hockey tournament Friday at Tri-Town Sports Complex in Cromwell.
Rob Greenwell won the puck behind the net and centered to Morgan, who beat goalie Vinnie Digioia (34 saves) with a one-timer between the legs.
Matt Kramer had one goal and one assist for Newington (17-5). Rob Murphy scored with 1:17 left in the second to tie the score at 2. Tim Poulin circled the goal and passed it across the crease to an open Murphy at the left of the net.
Mike Sims scored first with 4:05 left in the opening period and Kramer answered, tipping in a shot by Keith Whitehouse to tie it with 2:29 remaining. Joe Paul then scored on an assist from Sims with 4:24 to go in the second.
Newington outshot Sheehan 19-2 in the third period. Sheehan finished 12-5-3.
